Kristan Cunningham

As host and lead designer of HGTV’s Design on a Dime, Kristan has brought her expertise in do-it-yourself design to viewers for years- and now she’s bringing it to Rachael Ray viewers as well. Proving that design can be affordable and fun, Kristan encourages people to stop playing by the rules and start thinking outside the box. Inspired by viewer’s pleas for help, Kristan is challenged to use her tricks of the trade and turn any decorating dilemma into an achievable reality. From advice on the best tools and materials, to the inside dish on the latest trends and best places to find a deal, Kristan shares her cost-saving solutions for every space- indoors or out. In addition to her takeaway tips, Kristan regularly amazes viewers with everyday double-duty household solutions and provides easy-to-understand instructions on a wide range of projects. Her energy and can-do spirit encourage people to roll up their sleeves and try it on their own. “The best part of my job is when people tell me how proud they are of their work. But what’s even better is when they tell me they had fun doing it. That’s when I know I’ve made a difference in someone’s life.”

In 1999, Kristan began her career in design working in showrooms and assisting other designers in the Los Angeles area. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she was looking for more in her career. In 2001, a friend invited Kristan to partner up and compete on HGTV’s Designer’s Challenge. One year later, producers contacted Kristan and asked her to try out for the host and lead designer role for a new program, Design on a Dime. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Kristan auditioned for the role and soon thereafter was signed. In 2002, Kristan kicked off her four-year tenure on Design on a Dime and became one of HGTV’s most recognizable faces. “I loved my time on Design on a Dime because it gave me the opportunity to bring good design into the homes of people who didn’t know how to make it happen on their own.”

In 2006, Kristan learned that television personality Rachael Ray would host a new, daytime syndicated program. “I knew immediately that I wanted to work with Rachael. She launched her television career making dinner accessible, affordable and fun. That’s exactly my approach to design. I knew it would be a perfect match!” Kristan was right. Producers of “Rachael Ray” were immediately impressed by her bright personality and endless ideas. She was asked to become a regular contributor on the show.

Kristan was an immediate hit with viewers. They write into the show asking for her help on a range of projects both large and small. Throughout season one, Kristan proved that there is no project she couldn’t tackle. Her takeaway tips, modern take on design and focus on the everyday person, make Kristan a surefire match for “Rachael Ray.” Kristan lives in Los Angeles with her fiance’ Scott and their dog Floyd.
